Eriksdalsskolan – A unique school
The school of Eriksdal is the largest compulsory school in Stockholm.
You find our yellow functional style buildings situated in the very centre of the
city but still facing water and the green open space by the bay of Årsta (Årstaviken)
The school of Eriksdal seethes with life from around 1 400 pupils and around 200 well
skilled staff members. Together we represent most parts of the world which renders us
the manifoldness that is part of our strength and success.
Other contributions to making our school special are our different profiles; the oldest
and best known of which are the Art and Design. Classes where the pupils have their own
special timetables that include extra time for art. Handicraft and woodwork. Newer, but
not less popular are our Sport Classes and our Music and Drama Classes also, of course
with their special timetables with extra time for sports and music and drama respectively.
Security and confidence
We are proud of being the largest compulsory school and well aware of the high
demands for competence when it comes to preparing our many pupils in the best way
for the future lives and studies. To answer to these demands we never crease
developing our working methods, modes of co-operation further education and teaching media.
We strongly believe that security and confidence found the atmosphere that leads
to good learning hence our pupils welfare consists not only of a team of two nurses,
a school welfare officer and psychologist, but also of a team of remedical teachers
and pedagogues. These team work closely together to ensure that also children with
special needs get the help and support they need to be able to meet the requirements
of the educational aims. Another of our many ways to enhance a secure and trusting
atmosphere at school as well as in the schoolyard is the ongoing work among a group
of teachers and representatives from the pupils welfare team. They leave no stones
unturned when it comes to solving problems with bullying in the best way for everyone
concerned. We also have to staff members who speak the language of the young, and who
are there for the pupils when they need an older friend they can trust in confide in.
Benefit of manifoldness
A school as large as ours can, of course, offer its teachers the benefit and support
of having many colleagues who teach the same subjects, we have, for instance, no less
then ten English, eight art and seven sports teachers which naturally facilitates an
enriches mutual work and planning. This is one of the reasons we seldom have problem
to recruiting qualified teachers.
Apart from a vast numbers of classrooms, rooms for art, music, handicraft, woodcraft,
computers, home economics and so forth, we also have an assembly hall takes no less
than 650 persons. The assembly hall – among other things used for seminars and
performances by music and drama classes – is situated close what form the centre of the
school, namely the school dining-halls, the school library, the school café and a room
for pupils leisure time.
Organization
The head Mistress, her two assistant Head Masters and assistant Head Mistresses – each
responsible fore one of the four parts of the school – form school management.
Other supporting areas are the school chancellery and the service & techniques
department. A computer technician and a person responsible for timetabling are other
valuable assents in the running of the school of Eriksdal.
